The Mechanism of Action of Knee Braces on the Meniscus

1. Limiting Abnormal Joint Movements

Meniscus injuries are often caused by sudden twisting, excessive flexion or extension of the knee, or external impact. Knee braces—especially those with support bars—can physically restrict movement, reducing excessive valgus and rotation of the knee joint. This helps lower the risk of meniscus tears caused by abnormal mechanical stress.


2. Pressure Distribution and Cushioning

Sports knee braces, such as those featuring silicone pads or open-patella designs, provide compressive support that stabilizes patellar tracking, reduces internal friction within the knee joint, and indirectly decreases localized pressure on the meniscus during physical activity.


3. Enhanced Stability and Proprioception

The elastic materials used in knee braces can provide light stimulation to the skin and tissues around the joint, thereby enhancing proprioception—the body’s sense of joint position. This improved awareness helps users detect abnormal movements earlier during activity, enabling timely adjustments and reducing the likelihood of injury.
